In today's society, people often complain that they feel isolated and cut off from meaningful interactions within their community. As an antidote to that, more and more people are choosing to get involved with the co-housing movement. It's sort of like the communites of the 60s, but all grown up. Hope for a Change
Saturday, June 21, 2008
Talk of climate change usually revolves around what we're doing to make our lives on the planet worse, or what the effects of warming temperatures will be. But there is another side to the climate change story. Quietly, more and more people are finding ways to live a less carbon-intensive life, without giving up all the comforts of home. This entire show is devoted to looking at eco-friendly living around the world. From an island in Europe that's completely powered by windmills, to an intentional community in Ithaca, New York called EcoVillage, you'll travel the planet looking for the latest ideas in environmentally sensitive living. Along the way, we'll find out if there really is hope that we can change.

Building the Dream (two-part series)
April 2002
Imagine a community that's designed by the people who live there: where residents live in the privacy of their own homes but gather in the community's common house to share meals and socialize several nights a week; where all decisions are made by consensus; where children roam freely under the watchful eye of many adults. More than 50 such communities exist in North America and dozens more are in the planning stage. Jill Eisen explores the small but growing movement called cohousing.
